Data spaces are defined by the Data Space Support Centre (DSSC)[1], as “infrastructures that enable data transactions between different data ecosystem parties based on a governance framework”. They hold immense potential for sharing large pools of data and developing data-driven services in key sectors. The webinar showcased real-world use-cases from projects focusing on sustainable mobility, energy flow management, pollution, and tourism, providing valuable insights into effective governance guidelines for data spaces.

Moderated by Sophie Meszaros, project manager at Open and Agile Smart Cities (OASC) and coordinator of DS4SSCC, the 90-minute webinar featured presentations from speakers who offered an overview of governance approaches and shared use-cases within their respective domains. Leona King from KU Leuven delivered an enlightening presentation on data spaces and governance frameworks, setting the stage for the subsequent discussions. Eric Pol from aNewGovernance discussed the use-case DATES, highlighting its impact on the tourism sector. Justine Gangneux from Eurocities presented use-cases from DS4SSCC, focusing on sustainable mobility and energy flow management. Charlotte Ducuing from KU Leuven delved into the use-case PrepDSpace4Mobility, emphasizing its implications for transport and mobility. Sergio Cinnirella from IIA CNR concluded the use-case presentations by sharing insights on the use-case GREAT, addressing pollution.

The Q&A session allowed participants to engage in discussions, seek clarifications, and exchange ideas. The session proved to be a valuable platform for stakeholders, including local government officials, policymakers, urban planners, industry representatives, researchers, and academics, to share their expertise and perspectives.

With the webinar "Governance for Data Spaces," the participants gained valuable knowledge that will contribute to the advancement of data-driven services and the sustainable development of data spaces in smart cities and communities. The event's success highlights the importance of effective data governance and collaboration among stakeholders to harness the potential of data spaces for the benefit of society.
